KSL Sakura Comes to Baltimore April 28, 2019

This big 292x45m (958×147.64ft) bulk freighter was built by Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding in Shanghai, China in 2015 according to BalticShipping.com. She is owned by Golden Ocean and is one of their Capesize ships (ship datasheet).

In the video below she can be seen coming in looking empty amidst other ship and tugboat/barge traffic. As the pilot boat Maryland approaches water can be seen gushing out of her anchor ports. In the final scene just after she passes under the Key bridge the tugboat Lynne Moran can be seen alongside. You can get a sense of the massive size of this ship by looking at the people on deck.

Southern Maryland Celtic Festival April 27, 2019

I’d been waffling between the Fells Point Maritime Heritage Festival (Formerly the Privateer Festival which I attended last year) and the Southern Maryland Celtic Festival. Then a member of a living history group called the Wilde Irishe emailed me to see if I could come and that sealed the deal. The Maritime Heritage Festival will have to wait another year.

I found this event to be well put together and well worth the steep entry fee of $25 ($20 if purchased in advance plus a service charge). There’s a wide variety of things to see and do here with a lot of competitions from dance to music to sports.

IMG_4992-1

There were also a large number of food options with at few doing Celtic food and drink. As the line to those were long I did the shrimp basket from Calvert Crabs which I found to be reasonably priced for event food at $10 for the basket and $1 for the bottle of water.

There were a number of living history groups from a variety of time periods spaced out comfortably with a variety of exhibits and demonstrations for the visitors to enjoy and learn from. The photo below is one I took of the Wilde Irishe group.

I ran into an exhibit presented by The Longship Company, a boat called the Gyrfalcon. I hadn’t heard of them before but hope to be able to catch their vessels on the water soon!

I would definitely recommend keeping an eye out for this event next year if you missed this one! You can see more photos I took at this event by clicking here.

WECO Josefine Comes to Baltimore April 21, 2019

Writing a blog post on a bulk freighter ship like this one is usually a bummer because it can be difficult to find out anything about them such as who owns it. However, things are different for this 180x30m (590.55×98.43) ship which was built by Tsuneishi Heavy Industries and delivered January 15, 2018, their 242nd delivered vessel. Watch this great video of the naming and launching ceremony for this ship! This ship is owned by WECO Bulk and according to the launching video she is named for the daughter of the CEO.

In the below video she can be seen being helped towards Sparrows Point, owned by Tradepoint Atlantic, by tugs Timothy McAllister and Robert E. McAllister amidst pleasure boat traffic. For best results watch in FULL SCREEN. You may need to watch for 20+ seconds before full resolution kicks in.

On this day I also saw the vehicles carrier Hoegh Asia arrive and the cruise ship Carnival Pride depart.

Hoegh Asia Comes to Baltimore April 21, 2019

This 228x32m (748x105ft) ro-ro vehicles carrier was built in 2000 by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering in Seoul, South Korea. Owned by Hoegh Autoliners she can carry 7,850 cars. She had a bad day May 4, 2012 when she ran aground while entering Port of Livorno. She was having a better day on June 29, 2015 when she made the inaugural port call to Freeport, Texas’ new Horizon Terminal vehicles facility.

In the video below she can be seen being approached by the pilot boat Maryland but we can’t see the pilot boarding because the lee side was on the other side of the ship. As she passes look at the top for the basketball court! It can also be seen that she is due for a repainting. After passing under Maryland’s Key bridge the tugboat Lynne Moran can be seen alongside her. In the final scenes the tugboat Bridget McAllister can also be seen helping the Hoegh Asia to dock. For best results watch in FULL SCREEN. You may need to watch for 20+ seconds before full resolution kicks in.

She is the third Hoegh Autoliner ship I have observed around Baltimore. The first would be the Hoegh Manila and the second the Hoegh Berlin.

This 270x40m (885.83×131.23ft) container ship was built in 2012 by Daewoo Mangalia Heavy Industries which is now Damen Shipyards Mangalia after Damen took control of Daewoo’s shareholding in 2017. Carnival Pride Departs Maryland April 14, 2019

I have seen this ship come into and out of Baltimore, Maryland a few times over the past few months. What is different is that she’d gone to dry dock (scroll down a bit to find the Carnival Pride) between February 3 and 16 in Grand Bahama Shipyard. She had previously gone to dry dock in 2014. I was able to find a short video of her in dry dock which you can see here. You can read more about this ship in a previous blog entry I wrote about her November 25, 2018 arrival to Baltimore. I have additionally seen her on October 28th, 2018 and January 6th, 2019 though I did not write blog entries for those viewings.

The Carnival Pride is looking really good in the video below. In the first scene you can also see the cranes coming down on the container ship MSC Vigo. A Baltimore police boat can be seen in the first three scenes of this video as well. For best results watch in FULL SCREEN. You may need to watch for 20+ seconds before full resolution kicks in.

Hermes Leader Comes to Baltimore, Maryland April 13, 2019

This 199x35m (562.89×114.83ft) vehicles carrier is owned by Ray Car Carriers according to BalticShipping.com and operated by NYK Line. She was built in 2015 by Hyundai Mipo Dockyard and quickly became a hero when she rescued 336 people on July 14 in the Mediterranean Sea. I have been unable to find more details about this rescue so I don’t know what vessel they were rescued from.

In the video below she can be seen passing the outbound tug Elizabeth Ann. Tugboats Timothy McAllister and Bridget McAllister assist her into Baltimore, Maryland. Watch for the kayaker in the last scene! For best results watch in FULL SCREEN. You may need to watch for 20+ seconds before full resolution kicks in.
